Massachusetts Safest State to Raise a Family

New Mexico is the most dangerous state to raise a family, data shows. Findings based on FBI crime data shows New Mexico has the highest violent crime rate in the US.

It also has the second-highest homicide rate of 12 per 100,000 people and is the third worst state for property crimes with 2,998 property crimes per 100,000 people.

Crime data from the FBI to examine violent crimes and property crimes. Eight types of crime , homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft, were analyzed.

The violent crime rate and property crime rate were calculated per 100,000 people, then totaled to form the combined total crime rate ranking the 50 states from safest to most dangerous.

Washington ranked as the second most dangerous state while Colorado is the third most dangerous state. Louisiana and Oregon round out the top five worst states to raise a family.

New Hampshire is the safest state to raise a family with a violent crime rate of just one-third of the national average and much lower crime rates than other US states. It also has the lowest motor vehicle theft rate and the second-lowest rate of aggravated assault.

Idaho is the second-safest place to raise a family, followed by Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
